Chartered on March 6, 1949, in Wilmington, Delaware, we became the first chapter of Delta Sigma Theta, Sorority, Incorporated, in the state. Since then, we have established an extensive track record of addressing social needs in New Castle County. 

We pay tribute to our Charter Members: Elizabeth Hamilton Anderson, Myra Webster Gibbs, Grace Price Goens, Allie Miller Holley, Louise Syphax Hopkins, Edith Carter Johns, P. Rozellie Mabry O’Neal, C. Gwendolyn Redding, Marjorie Wright Scott and Harriet Green Seldon. They set high standards when they decided to come together and use their collective voices to make a difference in the community. 

Over the years, we have grown and expanded from ten visionary Delta women, who were our Charter Members, to nearly 300-chapter members.  Our current membership includes teachers, engineers, attorneys, elected officials, administrators in various fields, as well as entrepreneurs and business professionals of every kind. Ranging in ages from recent college graduates to seasoned members approaching their centennial, chapter members take their “Lifetime Commitment” seriously.

The chapter has been recognized for its comprehensive, innovative, and impactful programming. In addition to receiving several honors from Grand Chapter and the Eastern Region of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, we received the Governor’s Outstanding Service Award, as well as recognition and tributes from other community and local organizations. 

We continue to be focused on meeting the needs of the community. This is reflected in our youth initiatives - Delta Academy, Delta GEMS and EMBODI mentoring programs, as well as the Young Entrepreneur Program and the Jabberwock scholarship program.  It is also manifested in our annual community events such as Financial Fortitude, the RED Run 5k and “Empowering Our Sisters: Our Journey to Wellness.”  We honor the legacy of our Charter Members and remain dedicated to “Sisterhood, Scholarship and Service!”

The Wilmington (DE) Alumnae Chapter serves New Castle County, Delaware and Wilmington, DE not including the southern areas of Middletown, Odessa, Townsend (MOT), Delaware City, Port Penn, St. George's, Clayton, and Smyrna.
